The Greek Meals Service

The Greek Meals Service is funded by the Department for Families and Communities, under the Home and Community Care Program (HACC). This is a Commonwealth and State Gonvernment funded program to assist the frail aged, people with disabilities and their carers in the Greek community and/or those who adhere to the Orthodox faith. The Program assists people to remain independently in their own home, often preventing premature admission to other forms of care, and enhances their quality of life.

The purpose of the Greek Meals Service is to provide cultural, nutritious meals, together with personal contact to the elderly and frail members of the Greek community.  Hot three-course meals are delivered between 10 am – 12:30 pm each week day (except public holidays), throughout the year.

Our meals service plays a vital community role. It assists people to remain independently in their own home, often preventing premature admission to nursing homes and enhancing their quality of life.

Frozen meals are available during weekdays for weekends and public holidays.

The meals consist of soup, main course and desert which accounts for about a third of an elderly persons daily nutritional and energy requirements. We also cater for people with special needs.

The Greek Meals Service caters for both long and short term needs.

Carers of the recipients can also access the meals service.

Meals are delivered throughout the Adelaide metropolitan area.

Our service is provided to recipients following a referral from a doctor, hospital, family members, carers, health care providers or self referral.

Any one is eligible who has an identified need who is unable to prepare or shop for food.

Volunteering

All meals are delivered Monday to Friday by volunteers. For only a few hours a week, fortnight or even a month, you can make a difference. This service cannot operate without the support of volunteers.

All volunteers are reimbursed with petrol allowance.

The Greek Meals Service is always in need of more volunteers.
